Four campuses offering top-rated culinary education
Johnson & Wales University is a private university offering career-oriented education. Its main campus is located in Providence, Rhode Island and was founded in 1914. The university also operates campuses in four other major US cities. There are currently more than 16,000 students enrolled in the university’s business, hospitality, education, technology and culinary programs.
Culinary arts has been offered as a major at Johnson & Wales University since 1973. Todayf, the program is one of the most respected of its type and has produced some of the nation’s top chefs. From day one, students learn and develop their skills in actual kitchens. This practical experience is something that only the top cooking schools can offer. In addition to this, every student has the chance to gain valuable experience as part of an internship or co-op program.
Classes have an average of 18 students, so personal attention from instructors isn’t hard to come by. Periodically, distinguished chefs from around the world will drop by the Johnson & Wales University campuses to share some of their secrets. Likewise, the university will sometimes send its own students out into the world. In fact, Johnson & Wales students were recruited to help cook for the athletes in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece.
Students can receive two degrees in just four years. The first two years are spent working towards an Associate’s degree in culinary arts or baking & pastry arts. After that, the next two years are spent earning a Bachelor’s degree in culinary arts, baking & pastry arts, culinary nutrition, food marketing, food service entrepreneurship or food service management. Not all Bachelor’s degree programs are available at every campus location.
Financial aid is available to students who meet minimum requirements. In fact, Johnson & Wales University awards tens of millions of dollars of aid to its students every year, in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans.
The University’s alumni includes famous TV chef Emeril Lagasse.
